My husband cooked dinner, and right after my son and I ate, we collapsed Pretending to be unconscious, I heard him on the phone saying, \u201cIt\u2019s done\u2026 soon they will both be gone.\u201d I kept my cheek pressed against the cold kitchen tile and forced my breathing to stay slow.<\/p>\n A few feet away, my son Noah lay beside his chair, one arm twisted beneath him. I watched the faint rise and fall of his ribs and counted three breaths before I dared look toward the hallway where Daniel had disappeared.<\/p>\n His voice drifted from the den.<\/p>\n I missed several words, but then I heard him clearly.<\/p>\n \u201cThey won\u2019t be a problem after tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n Footsteps came back toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n I shut my eyes.<\/p>\n Daniel stopped beside me. Every muscle in my body wanted to tighten when his fingers closed around my wrist, but I stayed limp as he checked my pulse and lowered my hand carefully back to the floor.<\/p>\n Then he crossed to Noah.<\/p>\n I heard him touch my son\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n \u201cThis will be easier for everybody,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n That almost broke me.<\/p>\n But I didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n Daniel picked something up from the table and walked away. A moment later, the door to the garage shut.<\/p>\n I opened my eyes.<\/p>\n Noah\u2019s were already open.<\/p>\n I raised one finger to my lips.<\/p>\n \u201cPhones,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n Mine was gone. So was his.<\/p>\n Then I noticed my blue dinner plate still sitting on the table with several bites untouched.<\/p>\n I didn\u2019t know what Daniel had put in our food, or whether the plate could prove anything. I only knew I wasn\u2019t leaving it entirely in his control.<\/p>\n I pulled open the freezer drawer, grabbed a clean freezer bag, and scraped some of the untouched food inside. Noah held the drawer steady while I sealed the bag and hid it behind a half-empty package of frozen peas.<\/p>\n Then I put the blue plate back exactly where Daniel had left it.<\/p>\n Almost exactly.<\/p>\n My hands were shaking so badly that I couldn\u2019t tell whether I\u2019d moved it an inch or two.<\/p>\n We still needed help.<\/p>\n Then I remembered the corded phone Daniel had complained about for years.<\/p>\n It was hidden in the narrow cabinet beside the pantry, behind a stack of old takeout menus.<\/p>\n I picked it up.<\/p>\n There was a dial tone.<\/p>\n I called 911.<\/p>\n I gave the dispatcher our address first. Then I told her my son and I had both collapsed after eating the same dinner and that my husband had spoken as though he expected us never to wake up.<\/p>\n She asked where Daniel was.<\/p>\n \u201cI think he\u2019s outside,\u201d I whispered. \u201cBut I don\u2019t know if he actually left.\u201d<\/p>\n Noah crawled to the window and lifted one corner of the blind.<\/p>\n He looked back at me and shook his head.<\/p>\n No car leaving. No sign of Daniel.<\/p>\n The dispatcher told me help was coming.<\/p>\n Noah wanted to run for the back door immediately, but I stopped him.<\/p>\n First I opened the freezer again, took out the sealed bag of food, and tucked it inside the waistband of my sweatpants beneath my shirt.<\/p>\n Then I helped Noah stand.<\/p>\n His knees buckled once, and I caught him against the refrigerator until he could support himself.<\/p>\n We crossed the kitchen slowly, Noah gripping my wrist while I kept one hand against the counter.<\/p>\n I unlocked the back door.<\/p>\n Headlights suddenly swept across the blinds.<\/p>\n I slammed the deadbolt back into place and pulled Noah away from the window.<\/p>\n \u201cFloor,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n He understood immediately.<\/p>\n Noah dropped beside his chair.
