Their suitcases were already packed and waiting by the front door, each one neatly tagged and ready to go. My mother stood in front of the hallway mirror applying lipstick while my father paced nearby, checking his phone and refreshing the flight status.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to come,\u201d my mother said without turning around.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to see you off,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n
Then the room began to tilt.<\/p>\n
It always started the same way: a strange flutter in my chest, followed by a sudden racing heartbeat. The kitchen seemed to brighten, then narrow at the edges. I reached for the counter, but my hand missed.<\/p>\n

The younger paramedic studied the monitor, and for a brief moment, his professional calm disappeared.<\/p>\n He looked at his partner.<\/p>\n She looked toward the door.<\/p>\n \u201cWe need to transport her immediately,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is more than a simple fainting spell.\u201d<\/p>\n My father was already holding his car keys.<\/p>\n \u201cShe\u2019ll be fine,\u201d he said. \u201cThe flight leaves at six.\u201d<\/p>\n He said it gently, as though he were reassuring everyone in the room.<\/p>\n That was the part I would never forget.<\/p>\n There was no anger in his voice. No obvious cruelty.<\/p>\n He simply seemed to believe that everything else could wait until after the flight.<\/p>\n My father placed a hand on my mother\u2019s back.<\/p>\n My sister picked up her garment bag.<\/p>\n Then the three of them walked around the stretcher and stepped out the front door.<\/p>\n I heard three car doors close.<\/p>\n Then an engine started.<\/p>\n A few seconds later, the ambulance siren carried me in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n I woke beneath an unfamiliar ceiling.<\/p>\n The first sound I recognized was a steady electronic beep.<\/p>\n A heart monitor was counting the beats my own heart had struggled to maintain.<\/p>\n An oxygen tube rested beneath my nose. My chest was sore from the emergency treatment I had received.<\/p>\n Later, a nurse explained what had happened.<\/p>\n My heart had fallen into a dangerous rhythm, and the medical team had worked quickly to restore it.<\/p>\n A young doctor stood at the foot of my bed.<\/p>\n \u201cFlorence, you\u2019re at St. Brendan\u2019s Hospital,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re in the cardiac unit.
