Marcus finally turned the tablet toward Nathan, but he did not hand it over right away. The former operations chief looked at him for a long second and said there was something Nathan needed to understand before he went inside for Lily. Whatever had happened during those 3 hours 41 minutes was no longer limited to the driveway.<\/p>\n
Nathan stared at the screen.<\/p>\n
The wet tarmac stretched behind them, bright under the vehicle lights. One of the SUVs idled nearby. Marcus kept one hand against the tablet and lowered his voice.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou need to know what Claire was doing with that phone,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nathan\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n
\u201cI already know. She was recording Lily.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not all she was recording.\u201d<\/p>\n
Marcus finally released the tablet.<\/p>\n
Nathan looked down.<\/p>\n
The first video was the doorbell footage he had watched from the aircraft. Lily barefoot on the driveway. Unicorn pajamas. Tears on her cheeks. Meredith blocking the door. Brooke dumping water near her feet while Vanessa held the dish soap and Erin laughed. Claire standing behind them with her phone raised.<\/p>\n

The angle was different. The camera was closer to the driveway, pointed toward Lily and the front door. The audio was clearer. Nathan could hear Lily asking to be let inside.<\/p>\n
Then he heard Claire\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n

Lily answered through tears.<\/p>\n

Nathan stopped the video.<\/p>\n
For a moment, he looked toward the house beyond the SUV.<\/p>\n

Marcus did not argue. He simply opened the rear door of the SUV.<\/p>\n
Nathan climbed in.<\/p>\n
The drive to the house took only minutes, but every turn felt too slow. Marcus sat beside him, reviewing the information already gathered. The attorney had confirmed the custody documents were current. The police had been contacted. A child-protection intake had been started. Nothing was being left to a single person\u2019s word.<\/p>\n
Nathan listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n
Then his phone buzzed.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Alvarez.<\/p>\n
He answered immediately.<\/p>\n
\u201cNathan?\u201d<\/p>\n
Her voice was shaking.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI can see the upstairs light. Lily is at the window.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan looked toward the dark road ahead\u201cThank you. Stay where you are.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n
The call ended.<\/p>\n
Nathan slipped the phone into his pocket.<\/p>\n
Marcus glanced at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou good?\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan took one breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. But I\u2019m focused.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was the only answer he gave.<\/p>\n
When the SUV turned onto Nathan\u2019s street, the house came into view.<\/p>\n
The driveway was still wet.<\/p>\n
The red plastic bucket was lying on its side near the edge of the concrete. A thin trail of water ran toward the street. One of Lily\u2019s small sneakers was beside the front step.<\/p>\n
Nathan saw it through the windshield.<\/p>\n
He reached for the door before the SUV had fully stopped.<\/p>\n
Marcus caught his arm.<\/p>\n

Nathan looked at him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not going in blind.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan nodded once and stepped out.<\/p>\n
The front door opened before he reached it.<\/p>\n
Claire stood there.<\/p>\n
Her phone was still in her hand.<\/p>\n
She looked exhausted rather than frightened. Her hair was pulled back loosely, and she wore the same clothes she had been wearing in the recording. Meredith stood behind her.<\/p>\n
For a second, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n
Then Claire said, \u201cNathan, this is not what you think.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan did not answer that.\u201cWhere\u2019s Lily?\u201d<\/p>\n

Nathan looked past her.<\/p>\n
\u201cLily. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Claire lowered her phone.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s calming down.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThen she can calm down with her father.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meredith shook her head.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have no idea what she did.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nathan\u2019s expression did not change.<\/p>\n
\u201cI watched the footage.\u201d<\/p>\n
That ended the argument for a moment.<\/p>\n
Claire\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n
Nathan continued.<\/p>\n
\u201cI watched my daughter standing barefoot outside while four adults laughed. I watched you record her. I watched your mother block the door. I watched Brooke dump water beside her feet.\u201d<\/p>\n
